Epsom and St Helier NHS Laptop Reuse Project

Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust
As part of an IT refresh project, Epsom and St Helier NHS wanted to ensure that their end-of-life IT equipment created a positive social impact, rather than simply being disposed of. All activity needed to meet strict compliance with the Data Protection Act, GDPR, and European WEEE Regulations.

Requirements

  • Fully compliant data erasure or physical destruction of data-bearing devices
  • A seamless and auditable process
  • Clear roles, responsibilities, and a single point of contact
  • Where possible, reuse or generate value from decommissioned equipment

The Approach

Concept Management worked closely with the NHS Trust to deliver a secure, compliant and socially conscious solution. The project had one major challenge: to deliver it free of charge while still providing rebates to support charitable causes. Concept’s data disposal methods included the use of Blancco software, applying the latest wipe standard — exceeding National Cyber Security Centre specifications. Devices were securely wiped, refurbished, and installed with new software before reuse. The partner charity selected was Transforming Lives, a local organisation focused on helping individuals overcome addiction, homelessness, mental health issues, and social isolation through community programmes and sport.

    Impact Through this partnership:

    • All laptops were securely wiped, refurbished, and donated to Transforming Lives
    • The charity’s staff and volunteers were equipped with IT to support their operations
    • The initiative diverted valuable equipment from waste, enabling reuse instead of recycling
    • Rebates from the project helped fund ongoing community programmes
    • Recovery football teams and leagues
    • Walking football for over 50s
    • Boxing sessions at Elite Thai Boxing gym
    • Fishing groups for ex-offenders and vulnerable individuals
    • Social support groups for mental health and wellbeing

Some of these lads have been helped back into work. It’s about getting their social skills back, helping them access foodbanks, housing, and other essentials. We’re not trying to save the world — just doing our best to help.

Conclusion

This project proves how responsible IT disposal can become an opportunity for social change. It demonstrates what’s possible when technical excellence, compliance, and compassion come together — helping not just organisations, but people.
