Sony PlayStation, together with their repair centre, required a seamless and secure process for recycling unrepairable gaming devices. This process needed to fully comply with Environment Agency WEEE regulations, GDPR requirements, and Sony’s internal disposal policies. Central to this was adherence to the Data Protection Act, ensuring that all data-bearing devices were either securely overwritten or physically destroyed, while maintaining a fully auditable, closed-loop workflow. The objective was to create clear single points of contact, enforce traceability, and enable both Sony and Concept Management to confidently demonstrate compliance at every stage.
Work Undertaken
Unrepairable gaming devices were designated for destruction. Hard drives were removed and processed through Sony’s existing secure disposal channels. The remaining units were collected, dismantled, and the motherboards shredded. Every device was checked to ensure HDD removal, and all serial numbers were captured for audit purposes. Sony also required documented weight evidence to support their Producer Compliance Scheme obligations — a requirement we were fully able to meet. In addition, Sony wished to generate revenue through a rebate scheme linked to the inherent value of the scrap motherboards. This process was developed and embedded into the workflow. This project exemplified a true partnership: both organizations challenged traditional recycling methods and worked collaboratively to engineer innovative, secure, and compliant solutions. For Concept Management, this meant a complete overhaul of standard operating procedures to meet the high levels of data security, traceability, and brand protection required.
Results
The project team focused on simplifying and streamlining processes while maximising the effectiveness of existing resources. Clear roles and responsibilities were established for all stakeholders, ensuring full compliance, robust data security, protection of brand reputation, and the addition of a new revenue stream. The outcomes are unmistakably positive — the result is a significantly more secure and auditable process. The team set ambitious goals and collectively worked to exceed expectations, delivering a solution that is both compliant and commercially beneficial.
