Developed by the Mayor of London and his agencies in 2013, Prudential
RideLondon is the world’s greatest festival of cycling. The eighth edition
will take place over the weekend of 15-16 August 2019.
David Collier, Richard Collier and John Davies from Concept Management along
with Jeff Lea, Stuart Greaves and Michele Wilkinson, fellow cycling
enthusiast, undertook the Ride London Surrey 100, a vast, 100-mile
closed-roads sportive, which this year saw up to 27,000 people take part.
This flagship event is part of the Mayor and TfL’s cycling programme. More
will be invested than ever before to create more safe, easy and
well-connected cycle routes across the Capital; to encourage more healthy
and active travel. The programme includes new cycling infrastructure
(including a network of Cycle Superhighways and Quietways), Cycle Hire,
investment in cycle parking, community projects and events. TfL work with
schools and businesses and deliver cycling training, free to anyone living,
working or studying in London in partnership with London’s boroughs.
Prudential RideLondon provides a fantastic platform to help fulfil The Mayor
and TfL’s goal of encouraging more people to cycle more safely, more often.
TfL anticipates tens of thousands of spectators and participants every year
will take up regular cycling after each event. This will be achieved by
creating massive engagement with participants, spectators and media alike.
There is no other closed-road event like it that combines the fun and
accessible element of a free family ride in central London with the
excitement of watching the world’s best professional cyclists race in the
Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic and Prudential RideLondon Classique.
Taking a cue from the London Marathon , amateur cyclists also participate in
the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 – a 100-mile challenge on the same
closed roads as the professionals, with the added incentive of raising money
for good causes. Since 2016, the event has also featured the Prudential
RideLondon-Surrey 46 – a 46-mile sportive created specifically for newer and
also younger cyclists, and in 2018 the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 19 was
added to the programme.
To capture it all, the best action is broadcast live on TV in the UK and
internationally, to be seen by an audience of millions.
Prudential RideLondon also generates sustainable, long-term economic benefit
to London and the UK alongside the money raised for good causes; as
participants and spectators alike come to London both from the UK and
overseas to spend their time and money in the capital. More than £66 million
has been raised for charity since 2013.
After the inaugural event in 2013, the vision for Prudential RideLondon – to
be one of the world’s leading cycling events and a lasting legacy of the
2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games – has become reality.
Our team cycled, not just for the fun and experience but for a great cause
that is close to many men’s hearts – Prostate Cancer. Our team actively
canvassed as many people as they could and have raised just short of
£3,000.00 for the charity and gladly the figure is still rising due to
belated donations, cash received and the other riders funds.
After the ride, John Davis was quoted as saying, ‘’ I would like to say to
everyone who has sponsored the team and to everyone who has supported us
through our gruelling training sessions, sponsorships and even the crowds of
spectators who seemed to get bigger every mile, from a few people near the
start to the cheering crowds at the end. They are a huge boost to all of us
when riding over the finishing line, a great big thank you’’.
